BURGER DAY

Just a Burger? Just a burger. Robin, it’s so much more than “just a burger.” I mean…that first bite—oh, what heaven that first bite is. The bun, like a sesame freckled breast of an angel, resting gently on the ketchup and mustard below, flavors mingling in a seductive pas de deux. And then…a pickle! The most playful little pickle! Then a slice of tomato, a leaf of lettuce and a…a patty of ground beef so exquisite, swirling in your mouth, breaking apart, and combining again in a fugue of sweets and savor so delightful. This is no mere sandwich of grilled meat and toasted bread, Robin. This is God, speaking to us in food.

I’m not sure if I could have stated it any better than my friend Marshall from How I Met Your Mother did. In their quest for the perfect burger, Marshall sets his friend straight on how delicious this concotion of meat, cheese, bread and toppings can be. And reader, oh dear reader, it CAN be magical.

With our new intention on eating healthier, Ash and I have decided to limit ourselves to one burger a month. While painful to do initially, it has had some unintended and unexpected positives. For instance, when looked forward to a month, Wendy’s stops being a fast food joint and magically becomes a gourmet experience. All burgers taste incredible. Not to say that Ash and I don’t have impeccable taste. If it’s a bad burger, we will know it. But such was not the case on Friday. On Friday, we expereinced, for the first time, Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

Five Guys is a place that I have been wanting to try for some time now. They put one in Houston a good while ago and about 3-4 months ago, they finished the Waco location. It was our time!

Last week was a rough one. Both of us had tons to get done and stress about, so on Friday we just threw it all out the window for a couple hours. I scheduled a date night for us. We jumped in the truck and headed farther into the bustling metropolis of Waco.

We hit the very beginning of dinner rush as we entered 5G. The first thing that hits you is the smell. God resides in this smell. We went to the counter, I wasn’t terribly impressed with the prices. But hey, I heard it was good. About 7 bucks for a burger. I had heard also that it was mandatory that I order the Cajun fries.

We sat outside in the nice weather and waited. Ashley and I did the standard baby watching (yeah, I know. chill. not for a good while). We got our food and viola, “Burger Day” happened. It was pretty durn good. I got BBQ sauce and grilled onions. Ash got like, I dunno, veggies? I was preoccupied. Cajun fries were unique, but not off the charts.

Overall, I will give Five Guys a 7 out of 10. Really fresh ingredients, unique atmosphere, decent price. Give it a try for your next Burger Day…or tomorrow….or right now.
